Final Fantasy XIV Patch 3.35 Update, You Gotta Dig Deep!

Written by Katie — 30 Jun 2016

It's not long to go until the launch of Final Fantasy XIV’s Patch 3.35. Less than a month, infact! Carmate of Square Enix has been teasing us with even more screenshots of the special, new dungeon in his latest blog post. The Palace of the Dead will be launched during the next update, and us content thirsty adventurers can delve into it while we await more information on future patches and the next expansion.

But what do we know about The Palace of the Dead so far? Well firstly you’ll be able to unlock this new content at level 17, bringing new and veteran players together to dig deep into the seemingly never ending trial. Well actually it’s only 50 floors, but they are huge and will take a long time to clear according to Yoshida. Also, the map in the top corner of the dungeon is determined by a random generator; you’ll never be doing the same dungeon!

The questline itself begins in Gridania, and you will need to talk to Nojiro Marujiro in Carline Canopy to unlock it. However, Yoshida did recommend completing patch 2.4 content to enjoy the story and lore of this particular dungeon to its fullest (and to give you the added creep factor...)

Levelling inside the dungeon is exclusive and has no relevance to levelling in the outer realm of Eorzea. You will begin at level 1, but it has been said that levelling in the Deep Dungeon will be much quicker than it is in the outer realm. It will give new players a chance to get to grips with multiple classes, and will be quite nostalgic for long-term players, going back and playing the very first class picked up at the beginning of their adventures. Let’s hope I don’t just spam poison arrow like I did when I first began my Final Fantasy XIV journey… Guilty as charged.

Speaking of nostalgia, the menu that shows your level, gear, special items and special effects is also a blast from the past. The design is reminiscent of early Final Fantasy titles, and the sprite of your character’s class on this screen is a really neat, old-school edition too.

You’ll also be able to save your progress in the deep dungeon. Players will have two save slots, enabling you to participate in solo duty matching as well as partying up with friends. But you can utilise the saves however you wish. The duty finder is based on a player’s level progression, rather than matching up classes.

You will be able to enter the Deep Dungeon in any party set up you wish, and it is not required to have either tank or healer classes. There are special pillars throughout the dungeon to raise any incapacitated players, and you will also be able to use phoenix downs to raise team members if they fall. It will be intriguing to see how this plays out and whether it will feel like the same difficulty no matter the set up.

You will fight through hordes of monsters on each floor to find treasure chests and the teleporter to take you to a lower level. A boss will appear on every 10th floor that your team will have to defeat. However, if something comes up and you have to leave the dungeon before you can reach the boss, you won’t receive any penalties. Yoshida has said the team has created this dungeon to be played during spare time. So you don’t have to worry about balancing it with raid nights!

But what about rewards? Currently only one has been announced. You can obtain the glowing weapons seen in footage and screenshots for use in the outside realm. So currently we only have a weapon glamour reward, but perhaps more will be announced during release and future updates of the dungeon.

So now we have an understanding of what the dungeon will be like and a questline location to gear us up for the release of the Palace of the Dead. It won’t be long until we’re all diving into this bottomless pit, and it will be really interesting to see how long each floor takes to complete. Do keep checking back with us to find out patch 3.35’s release date.

On a side note. Is that a teaser we see of the new /doze poses? A lalafell sleeping like a female miqote? Hmm! Perhaps I’ll be able to sprawl out like a female lalafell soon. It would seem more reminiscent of my natural, crash-landing sleeping pattern...
